Commission a Custom Sapphire Ring

Creating a bespoke sapphire ring begins with a conversation. You may arrive with a clear idea of the design, or simply a colour you have fallen in love with.

Working directly with Nicky, the ideas gradually take shape around the sapphire and the person who will wear it. For a handmade commission, Nicky develops the design with the client and then personally brings it to life at the bench.

Appointments are available in Sydney, with phone consultations for interstate and international clients.

Choosing a Natural Sapphire

Nicky keeps a changing selection of loose natural sapphires for custom commissions, choosing each stone for its individual beauty. His selection includes blue, teal, green, yellow, pink and parti sapphires from Australia, Sri Lanka and Madagascar.

Colour is only part of the decision. Cut, treatment, origin, durability and the way a stone sits on the hand can all influence whether it is right for a particular ring. Nicky can guide the choice of sapphire and consider how its cut, proportions and colour will work within the finished piece.

Handmade Around the Stone

Where a sapphire ring is traditionally handmade, its setting and surrounding structure are formed individually around the stone.

Starting with gold or platinum at the bench, Nicky forms and builds the individual parts through forging, rolling, drawing, cutting, soldering, filing and shaping. Tiny hidden details beneath and around the setting can also be incorporated as the ring is built, giving the finished piece a character of its own.

Like the brushstrokes in a painting, Nicky's hands can be seen in the elements that make up the finished piece. Each ring is made with the intention that it will endure, treasured and passed on through generations.
